Andrew,I know I knock on your door in regards to James Haywood Kemp .From IGI records showing James Haywood Kemp CHRISTENED in 1831.
I have found some interesting news though for investigation.I have found by shear chance, that Richard Kemp and Elizabeth Strange had a child unmentioned in any of the family history as yet found.
Lydia Kemp was born in 1821 Bath,Somerset,(d 19 Mar 1902 Glebe NSW,buried Rookwood cemetry next day).Lydia was christened in St Andrews, Clifton,Gloucester,UK,31 Mar 1822.Here it is now shown her parents as Richard and Elizabeth Kemp. All this is in IGI.
Lydia was not in the 1841 census of the Kemp family of Bath.James was.(no record of him being Haywood James)However James Haywood Kemp's parents were Richard and Elizabeth Kemp m 1821 Bristol,Gloucester.
Im looking into whether Lydia is the Lydia Kemp who came out on the Orient in 1840 to Port Phillip.Regards John

      Dear Andrew,

I have seen on other websites of your interest in the Lucy Dennard and her assosciation with her husband''s family.

Firstly a bit about her father - Thomas Dennard (1803-1880) was a member of The Aldington Gang - a gang of smugglers that operated on the Romney Marshes which is a flat featureless expanse in Kent opposite France.

In 1826 the whole gang was captured and transported to Tasmania aborad The Governor Ready. Thomas ended up working for the Archer family. In TAS he met his wife, Ellen McCabe (a free settler) and had a number of children in Australia.

As a Transportee he was forbidden to return to the UK so it is unlikely that Lucy Dennard was from London.

After receiving his ticket of leave Thomas went to the mainland firstly to Melbourne and died in Ballarat in 1880.

In Victoria it is believed the first 6 of Thomas and Ellen's children were baptised together in 1846 at St James's Melbourne.

      1.Lucy Dennard b. 1837/38
      2.Bridget Dennard b.1840
      3.Ellen Dennard b.1841
      4.Jane Dennard b.1843
      5.Mary Ann Dennard b.1846.
      6.Thomas Dennard b.1844
      7.Henry Dennard b.1850
      8.Sarah Dennard b.1852

The following was supplied to me by an Australian researcher related to the Keating family.

Lucy Dennard married firstly James Heywood Kemp in 1855 in Prahan, Melbourne, Victoria. James was the son of Richard Kemp. It is thought that James was born about 1830 in Bristol, England. James died in 1867 in Ballarat aged 36.

Following the death of James Kemp in Ballarat in 1867, Lucy married a 2nd husband, James Collett in 1872.

Lucy (Kemp/Dennard) Collett died on 25.3.1898 from breast cancer at Urquart Street, Ballarat. Her death was registered by James Collett. She is listed as having been born in Kent although this is untrue. James Collett was buried 7.1.1902 in the same grave as Lucy in the Ballarat New Cemetery.

It is known that Lucy and James Kemp had 3 children. There appear to be no children from her 2nd marriage:-

      i) Robert Kemp
Born about 1857 in Ballarat, Robert Kemp married Margaret Keating in Prahan, Melbourne in 1883. The Keating family had come to Ballarat in 1852 and was involved in the hotel industry there for about 40 years.

      ii) Richard William Kemp
Believed born in Ballarat in 1861. Nothing further known at present.

      iii) Elizabeth Lydia Kemp
Born in Ballarat in 1862, Elizabeth Kemp married Robert Hampton in 1891. Robert had been born about 1861.

Robert Hampton died on 22.1.1900 due to head injuries sustained following a pub fight on 20.1.1900. Following his death Elizabeth (Kemp) Hampton married 2nd husband David John Stevenson in 1901.

The children of Elizabeth (Kemp) Hampton and Robert Hampton are:-

      a) Roy Hampton b. 1893

      b) Harold Hampton b. 1896 d. 1938

Harold Hampton is known to have married Elsie McDonald Davidson on 25th March 1927 and a daughter, Joan Nancie Hampton is recorded. Elsie died in 1970. In his will Harold left everything to his mother Mrs. E Stevenson (Elizabeth Kemp/Hampton Stevenson).

It has also been discovered that Joan Nancie Hampton married Wesley Booth Penberthy and is found in 1970 living in Carrum, a bayside suburb of Melbourne.

It is believed there are further descendants of Joan (Hampton) Penberthy and Wesley Penberthy.

As I believe you are located in Australia you would be better placed to check the authenticity of the above.

From the Australian white pages I saw thaere was a W B Penberthy in Yamba NSW. I did write to the address but never received a response.

In addition to the above I have various details on the Aldington Gang and details on the Dennard line back to the 1690s

Thomas the smuggler was the brother of my 4x Gt Grandfather Stephen Dennard. The Dennards were also related to the Gang leader George Ransley.

I hope the above is of interest,

      Kind regards,
      Mark Hawes,
      Cheshunt,
      Hertfordshire, UK.

      c) Herbert Hampton b. 1896 d. 1898

      d) James Hampton b. 1898
