Henry Cowan was one of the first grantees of land at Mahurangi where he built a
brickworks and ran a farm. He traded in timber to Melbourne and due to a head
injury sustained when hit by a shipspan was committed to Carrington hospital on
25 November 1864 when his youngest child Charles Duplat Cowan was only a few
months old. Henry died about 1873.
