    Notes

    • David WILLIAMS was born in the Parish of St Merryn, where a whole lot of records
have been lost. He married his first cousin who brought him to her Parish, St
Breock, to live. So their children and grandchildren, though they bore the name
of Williams, were brought up in the midst of his wife's family, the Groses' and
Pollards', the Symons' (afterwards Potter) of Gonvena; Doctor Wilkins, to all
of whom she was related; and amongst the many very congenial friends and
acquaintances of the Wadebridge District; seeing very little indeed of their
Williams forebears, all of whom lived out of the neighbourhood. Some of the
members of the Cornish family of Williams, from which our family have sprung,
have amassed great wealth, and for generations have occupied positions of
honour with great worthiness in the county of Cornwall, while others of the
same family have remained where they were, and are still among the sturdy
yeoman of the county of their birth. When David Williams' daughter in law, Mary
Magor, first saw him she was impressed with the fine, upright physique of her
future father in law, this same David Williams whom she first saw at St Breock
church, where he would be occupying the big sqare, high backed pew belonging to
Dunveth. His hair, she noted, was white and curling. He held the honary
position of being the constable of St Breock, an office borne by one of the
chief men of the parish, before Sir Robert Peel brought in his police force.
His mace, the symbol of his authority, which, while being held on high by the
constable, accompanied by the awesome words, "I demand the Peace," spoken by
him in a commanding voice, had the effect of dispersing a riotous mob. The Mace
had "G.R." painted on one side; on the other side, "Mace"; on another, "St
Breock"; and on the fourth side, "Constable."

Tombstone St Breock: "In memory of David Williams late of Dunveth in this
Parish, Yeoman, died 10th October 1859 aged 75. Also Mary his wife died 19th
January 1861 age 68 years. Also in memory of Mary Grose Williams youngest
daughter of above David and Mary Williams 7th November 1880. Also in memory of
Edith daughter of John and Emma Williams died at Roskear in this Parish died
9th November 1858 aged 4. Also in remembrance of William Henry Williams son of
the late David Williams of Dunveth and Mary his wife died at Paramatta,
      Australia 23rd April 1859 aged 39 years."
