As eldest son he was given a good education at a private school in France.
There are letters in the Gerring Family written from France by Robert to his
father in perfect handwriting on a lace type of paper. His education extended
over some years as when he returned home family tradition says that he could
hardly speak English.
His brothers and sisters were educated at home by a governess, a Miss Allan,
who appears in the family photographs of the period. They must have been living
at Guernsey at the time for the Album has the note "Ann Gerring lived in
Guernsey from 1850 thence to Bath," which is where Robert Senior died.
