    Notes:

    The Reverend James GARTSHORE held the Gartshore Estate for several years. He
    was the minister at Cardross in Dumbartonshire. The liferent payable to the
    widow of his brother, Patrick, became an overwhelming burden. To relieve
    himself of this burden he assigned the Gartshore Estate to his brother,
    Alexander in return for payment of these obligations. The Reverend Doctor of
    Divinity, James GARTSHORE entered the church and obtained the parish of Anwoth
    1n 1714. In 1721 he was translated to the parish of Kirkcudbright, which he
    retained until his death in 1760. He married the only daughter of the Reverend
    William MAXWELL, minister of Mimigaff, a sister to Colonel William MAXWELL of
    Cardoness. (Must be two different people.)
    From "Tranent and Seton, page 397: James GARTSHORE, M.A. (Glasgow 1651);
    minister of Penninghame 1661; transferred to Kilsyth 1666, transferred to
    Cardross 1673; D.D. (Glasgow); transferred ans adm. about July 1683; dem. 1689;
    died (date unknown). He married (1) 06 AUG 1691, Jean LOCKHART, widow of Gavin
    HAMILTON of Raploch: (2) o3 JUL 1696, Janet CHEYNE, widow of Walter McGILL,
    minister of Kilsyth. On 04 DEC 1694, when a member pf Presb. went to preach at
    Tranent, he found a "great disturbance and a rabble throwing stones at those
    assembled to hear him." The Pulpit was occupied by Bernard McKENZIE, and he had
    to conduct both diets of worship in the Kirkyard.- [Edin. Reg. (Marr.); M.S.
    Acc. of Min 1689.] In the Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae James GARTSHORE is
    mentioned. Fasti paragraph on his son James, Minister of Carmichael, refers to
    him as "son of James GARTSHORE of that Ilk."

    James married Christine Weir in 1658 in Gartshore, Dunbartonshire, Scotland. Christine was born about 1637. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
